Golden is based in SoMA, San Francisco, USA, and was started in 2017 by Jude Gomila. The company's full legal name is Golden Recursion Inc. Golden uses machine intelligence to build a self-constructing knowledge base. The platform contains canonical information describing entities (sometimes referred to as topic pages) and allows users to create, contribute, and compare knowledge by utilizing a set of AI-based tools. AI-assisted editing allows users to automatically extract summaries and infobox data from external web-based sources, and AI-based suggestions enable users to make quick, modular updates to topics.
Golden uses clusters to group related topics. Clusters include Blockchain & cryptocurrency, Cell-based and plant-based meat, Synthetic biology, Stem cell technology, COVID-19, and Biotechnology. Each cluster contains links to hundreds of topic pages.
In January 2022, Golden released plans to construct a Web3 protocol of itself on Golden.xyz.

Users can contribute to Golden by accepting or rejecting Golden AI's suggestions to the knowledge base.
Golden offers the Golden Research Engine for organizations that want to make more detailed searches in Golden's knowledge base. Members can opt to receive email alerts of new results in saved queries, add results to lists, and other functions.
Users can create lists of entities and select the columns from any field in the Golden Knowledge Base as well as private columns.
Golden has an API for enrichment that can post back attributes of an entity. It also has an API that gives entity results for a given query.
