Clara Foods is a biotechnology company launched by New Harvest — a donor backed cellular agriculture research institute — and founded by two New Harvest community members David Anchel and Arturo Elizondo in 2014. The company is based out of San Francisco, California and manufactures animal-free proteins using using yeast bio-fermentation techniques for use in food products.
Clara foods claims that their egg white products are superior to hen-born egg whites because their yeast fermentation process allows them to produce the same proteins found in natural egg white and manipulate the protein ratios present in egg whites — allowing them to engineer egg whites with different properties such as better ability to foam, act as an adhesive in gluten free products, or have specific nutritional properties.
On July 9, 2015 Clara Foods closed their seed funding round raising $1,750,000 and completed their time with IndieBio. Investors include: David Friedberg, Ali and Hadi Partovi, Scott Banister, and SOSV.
On April 8, 2016 Clara Foods announced raising $1,700,000 in their Series A funding round from SOSV.
