Overview

HubSpot is a company that provides customer relationship management (CRM) software to companies looking to scale their operations. The company was founded in 2006. HubSpot serves over 194,000 customers including DoorDash, Babbel, Casio, Eventbrite, Reddit, and Care.com. HubSpot is listed in Newsweek's America's Greenest Companies 2024.

History

HubSpot was founded by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah. The two met in 2004 while attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) together. They came up with the idea for HubSpot after a discussion about the changing landscape of marketing trends. The following year, Halligan and Shah developed a business plan for HubSpot and presented a prototype of the future HubSpot CRM at an MIT competition, where they became semi-finalists. They proceeded to create a blog and formed a community of support for the product before founding the company in 2006. HubSpot quickly gained a strong reputation after its software helped Schwartz Communications, a Boston-based public relations agency, grow its revenue by 300 percent. By 2010, HubSpot’s revenue reached $15.6 million.

On October 8, 2014, HubSpot launched its initial public offering (IPO) of 5 million common shares at $25 per share on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker HUBS. The IPO closed after one week on October 15. A total of 5,750,000 shares were sold. It included 750,000 additional common shares that were offered for sale to the underwriters.

In November 2016 HubSpot launched HubSpot Academy, an educational platform which provides various digital marketing training programs. The academy provides short lessons, singular topic courses, and comprehensive certifications. All courses are free to access.

HubSpot Ventures was launched in December 2018. HubSpot Ventures is a $30 million fund dedicated to supporting customer-first start-ups. The companies it chooses to fund must be in the process of building a leading software as a service (SaaS)-based product, be raising a seed, series A, or series B funding round with a notable lead investor, align with HubSpot's mission and values, and deliver unique value to the HubSpot community. In addition to providing an investment, HubSpot acts as a mentor to the funded company. HubSpot Ventures has invested in dozens of companies including PandaDoc, Pipe, QuotaPath, OneSignal, DataGrail, Vendr, Jasper, Arrows, Switchboard, Vanta, hapily, Payhawk, and Bardeen.

On January 31, 2023 HubSpot laid off 500 workers, approximately 7 percent of its total workforce. In an email sent out to HubSpot employees, the company stated that it had optimistically increased employee headcount faster than revenue and underestimated the impact of the economic slowdown in 2022. HubSpot provided a severance package to its laid off employees as well as other benefits.

Platform

HubSpot's platform contains separate hubs for marketing, sales, customer service, CMS, and operations. Basic features of each hub are available for free, and all features are accessible with a premium subscription. HubSpot is beginning to include artificial intelligence (AI) tools in its platform. In January 2022, HubSpot's App Marketplace surpassed 1,000 integrations. In addition to its platform, HubSpot provides professional consulting services.

Acquisitions

HubSpot has acquired multiple companies, including oneforty, PieSync, Clearbit, the Hustle, Motion AI, and Kemvi.
