Introduction
The Stellar protocol is developed by the not-for-profit Stellar Development Foundation, created by Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim in 2014. Stellar is intended as an open global platform to connect banks, payment systems, and individuals to reduce cost of payments like global remittance.
Architecture
Origins
The codebase was originally forked from the Ripple codebase. Major changes were made to the consensus protocol described by a whitepaper written by David Mazières.
Consensus
The Stellar Consensus Protocol does not rely on proof of work, or proof of stake, but rather uses a Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA) which is a generalization of the Byzantine agreement problem.

Stellar is launched
The Stellar protocol is introduced by cofounder Joyce Kim. The Stellar code is forked from the Ripple protocol, which was a previous project developed by Jed McCaleb.
