In 2010, CEO Joseph Walla and CTO Neal O'Mara co-founded Y Combinator-backed HelloFax with the idea of creating the paperless office. Since its initial launch of electronic fax services, HelloFax added electronic document signing and editing, which evolved into its own separate paperless office product called HelloSign in 2012.
HelloSign is based in San Francisco, CA. Any documents signed using HelloSign are legally valid under The Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 2000, as well as the EU's Electronic Signatures Directive.
HelloSign integrates with cloud storage services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote, Box, and SkyDrive, allowing users to save and access their signed documents in any of their cloud storage accounts. In addition to its web application, HelloSign also offers a free mobile app for iPhone and Android devices.
HelloSign also offers a Google App for on-boarding teams, and provides the option for users to use their Gmail username and password to log directly into HelloSign.
HelloSign for Gmail
In January 2013, HelloSign released HelloSign for Gmail, a Gmail extension that adds a "sign" button to all attachments received via e-mail, allowing users to open, sign and send documents from directly within their Gmail accounts.
HelloSign for Google Docs
In March 2014, HelloSign was selected as a Google launch partner for their Google add-ons release. The HelloSign for Google Docs add-on lets users directly sign any Google Docs right inside Google Docs. HelloSign for Google Docs also enables users to request a signature on a Google Doc from another party.
HelloSign offers a REST-based API that supports JSON. API users can send documents by either referencing an existing template or including a file in their API request. For the latter, the API user can either specify the x/y coordinates of the input fields, a signature page can be generated, or as a third option the location of inputs can be specified by inserting special text tags into the documents themselves. To learn the status of a document, the API user can either make an API call for it or listen for callbacks at a URL they have provided.
When the document has been fully signed and executed, a copy of the PDF may be downloaded via the API. HelloSign's API also provides an embedded signing option, which allows signers to fill out and sign forms on a company's website, rather than through an e-mailed signature request. The embedded document will appear in an iFrame on top of the API user's website.
