Yandex is a technology company that builds intelligent products and services powered by machine learning. Their goal is to help consumers and businesses better navigate the online and offline world. Since 1997, Yandex have delivered world-class, locally relevant search and information services. Additionally, they have developed market-leading on-demand transportation services, navigation products, and other mobile applications for millions of consumers across the globe. Yandex, which has over 30 offices worldwide, has been listed on the NASDAQ since 2011.

Yandex was blocked on the territory of ukraine in 2017.


Yandex launched the "Helping Hand" project to support doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, as well as anyone else in a difficult situation. Yandex’s delivery services developed exponentially, including due to the customer growth spurred by the lockdown. Express delivery of groceries and household goods to people’s homes in less than 15 minutes after placing an order launches in summer called Yandex.Lavka. Yandex launches Russia’s first smart home ecosystem powered by Alice. Yandex introduces a major search update (Vega). Yandex makes a significant advancement in driverless technology by road testing an autonomous delivery robot for small-size cargos and testing lidars developed in-house. Yandex’s Educational Initiative launches in September with the company announcing a five-billion-ruble investment in training 100,000 specialists for the IT sector over the course of three years.
Yandex unveils its first hardware product — Yandex.Station, a smart speaker equipped with the company’s AI-based Russian-speaking voice assistant. Yandex takes its autonomous vehicle from the lab to the road. Yandex launches two services at the start of this year: the car sharing service Yandex.Drive and the order delivery service Yandex.Eats. Yandex rolls out a large update to its search engine, which includes over a thousand improvements.
Yandex launched the first conversational AI assistant that is not restricted to a set of predefined scenarios called Alice. The company open-sourced CatBoost, a new machine learning library based on gradient boosting. Yandex developed and implemented a new search algorithm, Korolyov. The company began testing its driverless automobile technology. Yandex.Taxi and Uber agreed to combine their businesses in Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia and Kazakhstan. Yandex.Translate added a neural machine translation model. The company also introduced a number of new services and products for business, including a multifunctional voice-controlled solution for connected cars, Yandex.Auto, and a workplace collaboration platform, Yandex.Connect.
Yandex rolled out a new search algorithm that employs neural networks to retrieve search results based on meaning rather than key words. Named after the village of Palekh. The company started an educational project, Yandex.Lyceum, to teach computer programming to 14-15 year olds. A personalised content recommendation technology called Zen was incorporated into the Yandex browser and the Yandex launcher. Yandex starts a program aimed at developing and supporting educational web projects in history, literature, linguistics, art and philosophy. The year also saw the release of an app for making doctor’s appointments, Yandex.Health, as well as new services for business — Yandex.Telephony, a virtual automated customer communications system, and Yandex.Audience.
Yandex developed its own proprietary weather forecasting technology called Meteum. New Rules in Yandex.Direct. This year saw the launch of the Yandex.Parking mobile application for drivers and the Yandex.Radio. Also released was the beta version of Yandex.Transport. Two services for business began operating: in the summer, the Yandex.Delivery aggregator of logistics services; and in the autumn, a media service which, like an automatic information agency.
Yandex opened Yandex Data Factory, an international project providing big data solutions to corporate and enterprise clients. Yandex and Moscow’s Higher School of Economics jointly opened a computer science faculty, which prepares specialists in two areas — software engineering, and applied mathematics and informatics. A mobile news app was released alongside two new services — Yandex.City and Yandex.Master. The former helped users find and choose businesses and organisations until 2016, while the latter helped people find specialists for their domestic tasks and was closed a year after launch.
At the YaC-2013 conference, Yandex presented its own voice recognition technology SpeechKit and an API for working with it. Yandex became an associate member of CERN openlab. Yandex opened Yandex.Store, an app store for Android.
Yandex released a browser of its own design. Yandex introduced Real Time Bidding — a technology by which ad impressions are auctioned. Yandex opened its cloud storage service Yandex.Disk. of Yandex
In May, Yandex went public with an IPO on the NASDAQ stock market in New York. The company’s shares trade under the ticker YNDX. The company ventured beyond ex-Soviet territory, opening the portal in Turkey on September 20. It offers Yandex.Search, Yandex.Maps, Yandex.Mail and other services for Turkish users. Yandex presented its new technology, Crypta, which can classify different groups of users on the basis of their online behaviour. The company organised a competitive programming championship, Yandex.Algorithm. Yandex.Translate was launched.
