Uphold is a provider of a digital money platform created to change the way people access money. The company's platform offers to hold bitcoin in fiat currency and spend it as bitcoin as well as combines a platform application model with payment connectivity to offer financial services to a global market, enabling people and businesses around the world to access safe, transparent, fair and affordable financial services.
Headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, it also has offices in Larkspur, California; Braga, Portugal; London, and Shanghai.
Uphold (previously Bitreserve), was founded by Halsey Minor in 2013. In 2015 the company was renamed and former Nike CIO Anthony Watson was appointed CEO. In June 2015, Uphold removed all fees regarding money transfer for verified members. In July 2016 Uphold introduced a new pricing structure which removed a .05% withdrawal fee. Membership is free. There is a 3.99% fee for using debit, credit or China Union Pay. Members moving funds off Uphold via cryptocurrency pay a fee $2.99 and via bank transfer a fee of $3.99.
Uphold launched a private beta program May of 2014 which they opened to the public later the same year. Uphold's goal is to make money free and easy to use. Uphold develops and maintains its Open API.
Uphold offers transactions in traditional currencies, bitcoin, dash, litecoin, ripple, bitcoin cash, ethereum, BAT, bitcoin gold, several dozen fiat currencies and a small assortment of precious metals.
