Poloniex is a cryptocurrency marketplace and exchange founded in 2014 by CEO Tristan D'Agosta. The company was initially based out of Wilmington, Delaware. Poloniex's platform allows users to buy and sell a variety of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tron, as well as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and crypto futures. Poloniex charges users a small fee based on their trading volume during a thirty-day period.
Poloniex gained popularity shortly after its founding and was acquired by Circle Financial in early 2018 for $400 million. However, Circle sold Poloniex to an Asian consortium of unidentified investors in 2019 and spun out the company under the name Polo Digital Assets. Poloniex stopped operating in the United States and stopped allowing US customers to use the platform that same year. Also, in 2019, Poloniex acquired TRXMarket, a decentralized exchange for the Tron ecosystem.
