NovoNutrients produces Novomeal, a single-cell protein meal derived from non-GMO, food-grade microbes. These microbes are grown by fermenting a mixture of CO2 and hydrogen gases, usually from untreated industrial emissions.
NovoNutrients' technology relies on specially selected microbes that have evolved to live on CO2 and hydrogen. In bioreactors, a symbiotic consortium of these and other single-cell organisms assemble carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins from CO2, H2, O2, H2O, and mineral salts. The technology uses industrial CO2 without pre-treatment and allows for ready configuration of products (e.g. species-tailored amino acids).
