Nanosolar was a renewable energy company that used nanotechnology to develop thin solar film cells and panels. The company had facilities in both San Jose, California and Luckenwalde, Germany. The facility in San Jose was for solar cell printing and the one in Luckenwalde was for panel assembly.
The company was developing a product that printed CIGS (Copper, Indium, Gallium, Selenium) on thin film and was creating photovoltaics solutions. It developed its own platform known as Print2Power in order to manufacture its products. The company used printable semiconductor technology to design a rollable solar film consisting of three layers. The first layer was designed to be aluminum, followed by the printed CIGS layer, and finally, the thin top electrode layer.
The product was designed to be used in different contexts that were described as commercial, transportation, and exploration. The company stated that it could be used for camping purposes, on FEMA sites, trailers, buses, recreational vehicles, and more.
