Acquisition history

On January 4, 2011, Motorola finalized its split into Motorola Mobility Holdings and Motorola Solutions. Motorola Mobility Holdings was subsequently acquired by Google in May 2012 for approximately $12.5 billion.

On October 30, 2014, Lenovo purchased Motorola from Google for approximately $2.91 billion, with Google taking a loss. However, as part of the transaction, Google retained most of Motorola's 17,000+ patents and Motorola’s advanced technology and projects team.

History

Motorola was originally incorporated under the name Galvin Manufacturing Corporation on September 25, 1928, in Chicago by brothers Paul and Joseph Galvin. In 1947, the company changed its name to Motorola.
