Mithril Capital Management is a venture capital and private equity firm focused on technology companies that is headquartered in Austin, Texas and was founded in 2012 by Ajay Gopal Royan and Peter Thiel. Notable investments made by Mithril Capital Management include: Palantir, C2FO, Adimab, Auris, AppDirect, Auris, and Fractyl Labs.
On April 1, 2016 Mithril Capital Management completed raising their first venture capital fund with $600 million in funding. The fund will be invested over the course of 12 years.
On January 19, 2017 Mithril Capital Management completed raising capital for their second venture fund with $850 million in capital. The raised $850 million includes the management fees of Mithril Capital Management. The biggest investor of Mithril Capital Management's second venture fund was the co-founder of Mithril Capital Management, Peter Theil.
Since raising their second venture fund, Mithril Capital Management has been criticized for charging too much for management fees and taking too long to make investments with the capital they are holding in their second venture fund. The criticism lead to the firm discussing its business with the FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The co-founder of Mithril Capital Management, Ajay Gopal, says he will not change the investment strategy of the firm based on criticisms surrounding the management fees or the time it takes to invest its money:
