Fakespot is a developer of a data analytics platform used to spot fake online reviews of products and help consumers make better choices in online purchases. The technology uses artificial intelligence to analyze several parameters, including verified purchase reviews, writing style, grammar and spelling correction, purchasing patterns, and content correlation to spot those fake reviews. It uses these parameters to identify fraudulent product reviews and third-party sellers in real time. Fakespot is available for mobile use on iOS and Android and as a browser plug-in for popular browsers, including Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. The plug-in works for reviews on Amazon, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Apple's App Store.
Fakespot was founded in 2016 by Saoud Khalifah and Rob Gross. Fakespot is free for consumers to use, and the company generates revenue through verified partnerships, in which a company that meets Fakespot's guidelines (including quality products at competitive prices, good customer service records with free returns, and not using fake reviews or censoring negative reviews) can then serve ads through Fakespot's plug-ins and mobile applications. Fakespot also has an affiliate program for those partners. And Fakespot has licensed its technology to companies and marketplaces to help them eliminate fake reviews.
In May 2023, Mozilla acquired Fakespot for an undisclosed amount. In the terms of the acquisition, Mozilla noted that Fakespot would continue to work across all major web browsers and mobile devices, with the Mozilla team working to integrate Fakespot further into the Firefox browser, with future integrations unique to Firefox, aiming to make Firefox a better browser for customers making online purchases.
Fakespot's Trusted Deals program allows brands and companies to list their products through Fakespot with placements in Fakespot.com's product pages and extensions. They can earn a "Trusted Brand Badge" to mark that they are reliable to buy from. For a company or brand to qualify for the program, they have to earn good Fakespot review grades, offer good customer support and return policies, stand behind their products, and cannot be drop-shippers, knockoffs, or counterfeits.
