Spatial (company)

Spatial supplies a social understanding of location, founded by Griffin Morris, Lyden Foust and Will Kiessling.

Spatial is a company that aims to supply a social understanding of location to power application or analysis. The company was founded in 2016 by Griffin Morris, Lyden Foust, and Will Kiessling, in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States.

The company uses a combination of ethnographic research techniques and data engineering to use conversation taking place on social networks to gain an understanding about how humans move throughout their day. Spatial's data analytics and reporting products for retailers and restaurants measure the characteristics of the community and surrounding stores to help them make better decisions regarding real estate and location. The software tracks the behaviors and attitude of the area, which also determines property merchandising decisions.

Retailers and credit card companies can collect data about purchase behavior online and in-person, to make assumptions regarding consumer lifestyles, patterns, etc... This data combined with mobile phone companies tracking GPS location, allows Spatial to track routes, foot traffic, when people stop in front of stores or restaurants, which is all stored on a cloud.

Spatial Labs is a company that participated in the Class 76 - Mobility 2016 Summer cohort of Techstars and raised an estimated $2,100,000.

Several techniques are currently being developed for spatially resolved omics profiling, but each new method requires the setup of specific detection strategies or specialized instrumentation. Here we describe an imaging-free framework to localize high-throughput readouts within a tissue by cutting the sample into thin strips in a way that allows subsequent image reconstruction. We implemented this framework to transform a low-input RNA sequencing protocol into an imaging-free spatial transcriptomics technique (called STRP-seq) and validated it by profiling the spatial transcriptome of the mouse brain. We applied the technique to the brain of the Australian bearded dragon, Pogona vitticeps. Our results reveal the molecular anatomy of the telencephalon of this lizard, providing evidence for a marked regionalization of the reptilian pallium and subpallium. We expect that STRP-seq can be used to derive spatially resolved data from a range of other omics techniques. A refined spatial sampling technique transforms standard RNA sequencing into a spatial transcriptomics method.

Legitimate augmented reality use cases are hard to come by. Spatial, which dubs itself as a cross-reality platform, is launching today with $8 million in seed funding from iNovia Capital, Uber co-founder and Expa founder Garrett Camp, Samsung Next, Joi Ito of MIT Media Lab, Mark Pincus and Andy Hertzfeld to bring augmented reality to enterprise customers.
