Dunkin' Donuts, also known as Dunkin', is an American multi-national coffee and doughnut company and fast food service restaurant. The company was founded in Quincy, Massachusetts, by William Rosenberg in 1950. The chain was later acquired by the Baskin Robbins' holding company Allied Domecq in 1990. That same year, the company acquired Mister Donut and converted all of its locations to Dunkin' Donuts, which attributed to its growth. Baskin Robbins and Dunkin' eventually became subsidiaries of Dunkin' Brands in 2004, headquartered in Canton, MA.
In December of 2020, Dunkin' was acquired by Inspire Brands, was rebranded as a "beverage-led company," and was officially renamed Dunkin'. The renaming of the company began in 2019 and was rolled out across the US and international locations over time. Dunkin' has locations in approximately forty-two countries with over 13,000 locations worldwide, making the company one of the largest coffee and doughnut shop chains in the world.
Dunkin' Donuts was initially opened in Quincy, MA, by William Rosenberg under the name Open Kettle in 1948, but after discussions with company executives, the name was changed in 1950 to Dunkin' Donuts. Rosenberg conceived the idea for his restaurant through his own experience selling food in factories and construction sites where coffee and doughnuts were the most popular items sold. Once the restaurant was successful, Rosenberg began selling franchises in 1955.
