Atari is a video game developer, providing various types of games including mobile and online arcade games. The company was founded in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney and was an integral part of the development of arcade games, game consoles, and personal computer gaming. Iconic games from the company's history include Pong, Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command. Atari is largely credited with developing the modern video game console industry, with the Atari VCS, later known as the Atari 2600, which was one of the first game consoles and one of the highest-selling consoles of all time.
Founded in 1972, the company was acquired by Warner Communications. By 1984, the company was split into two divisions: the Atari Consumer Electronics Division, with properties that were sold to Jack Tramiel, and the arcade division, Atari Games, which was retained by Warner. In 1998, Hasbro acquired all Atari Corporation related properties, to create a new subsidiary Hasbro Interactive.
In 2001, Infogrames Entertainment acquired Hasbro Interactive and renamed it Infogrames Interactive, which was renamed Atari Interactive in 2003, while Infogrames Inc, formerly GT Interactive, renamed itself to Atari, Inc. In 2009, after acquiring all the minority shares of Atari related properties, Infogrames Entertainment renames itself Atari, SA.
In 2013, the four subsidiaries of Atari, SA, being Atari, Inc, Atari Interactive, Humongous Entertainment, and California US Holdings, filed for bankruptcy. The listing of the shares of Atari, SA were further suspended on the Paris Stock Exchange, before former CEO Frédéric Chesnais becomes Atari, SA's largest shareholder through his holding company Ker Ventures, allowing Atari, SA to stay solvent, and allowing Atari to exit from Chapter 11 later that same year.
