Aerion is an aerospace company that is interested in developing and re-introducing supersonic aviation to the public. The firm was founded in 2002 in Reno, Nevada, United States.
Aerion looks to develop transportation technology that shortens the time its takes to traverse long distances. The company has developed a carbon-neutral operated, supersonic aircraft called the AS2, or the Time Machine. The company works with Boeing, GE Aviation, Honeywell, and Spirit Aerosystems.
The AS2 is capable of traveling at Mach 1.4, which makes the jet the fastest subsonic cruise jet that can operate globally. The jet has a cabin for passengers, and is designed to reduce the sound that it creates so that it is silent. Hyper-luxury is the main mission to be achieved with the AS2 for Aerion. With the jet traveling at a specific altitude, the sonic boom will bounce off the atmosphere, and won't be audible from the ground, which is an atmospheric phenomenon called 'mach cut-off'.
Aerion is interested in making contributions in the industries of aerospace, engineering, and commercial airlines. The company looks to fly the AS2 jet by 2024.
On May 23, 2021 the company announced it is shutting down due to financial challenges.
