Original Acronis Logo.

The company's beginnings go back to 2001 and the founding of a new division within SWsoft. SWsoft was a server automation and virtualization software company that is now known as Parallels (name change in 2008). Acronis was founded in 2003 in Singapore by Serguei Beloussov, Stanislav Protassov, and Yakov Zubarev spinning off from Parallels. In 2003, the new company released Acronis True Image 7.0 a solution for protecting data applications and workstation systems, opened a US office in San Francisco, and began distribution in Japan and Germany.

In 2004, Acronis added server data protection services releasing Acronis True Image Server, doubling the company's revenues. They earned two Editor's Choice Awards from PC Magazine for data protection solutions and received investment from Insight Venture Partners.

In the following years, Acronis expanded into the enterprise market (Acronis True Image Enterprise Server), built Acronis Europe, acquired German software distributor PEZ, relocated their US office to Burlington, Massachusetts, and reached $100 million in revenues. In 2008, the company was incorporated in Switzerland, moving its corporate headquarters to Schaffhausen.

In 2010, the company added recovery to dissimilar hardware capabilities with the release of Acronis True Image Home 2011 and launched multiple OEM partnerships with companies including Intel, Western Digital, Seagate, Micron, and PNY. In 2011, Acronis released vmProtect a disaster recovery and data protection solution for virtual machines and partnered with Red Hat to improve data protection reliability in virtual environments. Acronis acquired GroupLogic in 2012, adding file sync and share solutions to their data protection products.
