American economist
Thomas Schelling (born April 14, 1921, in Oakland, California) was an economist from the United States. Schelling passed away on December 13, 2016, in Bethesda, Maryland. He is also known as Thomas Crombie Schelling.
Schelling's academic discipline focused on economics and game theory. He was educated at Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley, as well as San Diego High School. Wassily Leontief served as Schelling's doctoral advisor.
Throughout his career, Schelling advised numerous doctoral students, including Michael Spence, Tyler Cowen, Eli Noam, Richard Zeckhauser, Gustav Ranis, and Martin R.P. McGuire. Schelling was known for his work on the focal point in economics, also known as 'Egonomics'.
In 2005, Schelling was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.
