Michael Spence

Michael Spence (born July 11, 1943) is an economist, scientist, and professor from Montclair, New Jersey. He holds citizenship in the United States. Spence is known for his contributions to the signalling theory, and his academic disciplines include economics, microeconomics, and labor economics.

Spence graduated from a range of institutions, such as Magdalen College at Oxford University, Princeton University, the University of Toronto, and Harvard University. His doctoral advisor was Kenneth Arrow, a renowned economist.

In recognition of his work, Spence was awarded the 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He also founded the Institute for New Economic Thinking and is a member of the board of directors for Edge of Honor.
