Strapi

Strapi is a company offering an open-source headless content management system (CMS). Incorporated in France in 2016, Strapi is now headquartered in San Francisco with a remote workforce. A Node.js-based, back-end only CMS, Strapi aims to give developers the freedom to use their favorite tools while making it easier for editors to manage their content. Typical use cases include static websites, mobile apps, e-commerce, editorial, and corporate websites.

The Strapi project was founded in October 2015, with its first publication on GitHub. Strapi SAS was incorporated and launched in France, in 2016, by founders Pierre Burgy (CEO), Jim Laurie (Chief User Success Officer), and Aurélien Georget (Chief Product Office). The three founders had met while at University in 2013. After developing a few projects with the software, they decided to restart the project, publishing a new version in October 2017.

On October 15th, 2019, Strapi announced $4M in seed funding led by Accel and Stride.VC. Notable angel investors also participating in the round include Solomon Hykes (founder of Docker), Guillermo Rauch (founder of Cloudup, Socket.io, Next.js, and Zeit.co), and Eli Collins (ex-CTO at Cloudera).

On May 20th, 2020, Strapi announced a $10M series A round led by Index Ventures with the participation of notable angel investors and open-source experts, including Augusto Marietti and Marco Palladino (CEO and CTO of Kong, respectively), and David Cramer (co-founder and CTO of Sentry).

On June 22nd, 2022, Strapi announced closing a $31M Series B round of funding led by CRV with participation from Flex Capital, Index Ventures, BPI France, Raise Sherpas, and new notable Angel investors: Ashley Smith (Former GitLab CMO and GitHub VP of Marketing), Nat Friedman (Former GitHub CEO), Nicolas Dessaigne (Algolia Cofounder) and Matt Biilmann Christensen (Netlify CEO).

Strapi is an open-source, fully customizable, and extensible JavaScript-based headless CMS. It aims to reduce development times, allowing developers to quickly implement APIs and user-friendly out-of-the-box admin panels while allowing content to be managed anywhere across multiple devices. With custom components, content teams can design pages based on their own component libraries. As of 2022, Strapi is available as self-hosted with plans for a future cloud service.

Strapi is open-source under MIT license, and its community plan is free to all users without limitations on the number of content types, API calls, admin panel users, locales, or environments. The self-hosted community plan offers the following:

• Unlimited locales
• Up to three default roles
• Community support

Strapi is planning to release a fully hosted and managed cloud service that scales with customers. The company offers three self-hosted paid plans with enterprise features and services:

Priced at $9 per admin user/month, the bronze plan provides granular access controls with unlimited custom roles (instead of three default roles in the unpaid version) and improved support channels beyond community resources.

Priced at $29 per admin user/month, the silver plan offers the advantages of the bronze plan with additional guidance and assistance with access to a customer success manager and solutions engineer.
