RD2020

RD2020, also known as Reality Defender 2020, is a company developing technologies to combat deepfakes that is headquartered in San Francisco, California and was founded by The AI Foundation. The firms deepfake detection technology is made to target synthetic media related to political disinformation and manipulation. The company will target political candidates, press, political campaigns, political parties, and social media.

RD2020 builds on research and technology development in the Face Forensics project that was completed at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and research performed at The AI foundation, UC Berkeley, and other industry and academic organizations.

The co-founder and CEO of RD2020, Lars Buttler, made the following statements regarding the purpose of the company:

As a part of Reality Defender 2020, we hope to set a model for stakeholders in the upcoming election. The AI Foundation Nonprofit aims to discourage the generation and propagation of unsolicited and harmful synthetic content across technology companies, media outlets, political campaigns, and social media platforms. Our goal is to protect democracy, human agency, and truth.
