Dell Technologies, commonly known as Dell, is an American multinational computer technology corporation. The Round Rock, Texas-based company was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell, who started the company in his University of Texas dorm room. Dell manufactures and sells a myriad of personal and business computing technology and accessories, including computers, laptops, desktops, hardware, software, and cloud computing software.
After initially going public in 1988, Dell became a private company in 2013 after Michael Dell and private equity firm Silver Lake Partners bought back the company from shareholders. In 2015, the company acquired EMC Corporation for $67 billion and adopted the current Dell Technologies moniker. The merger is the largest tech deal in history as of 2022. Dell once again went public in 2018.
