Wave, formerly known as TheWaveVR, is a company that provides virtual musical performances, previously using virtual reality technology. It now offers them via digital streaming. Wave was founded in 2016 by Adam Arrigo, Aaron Lemke, and Finn Staber.
Wave's original app, as well as the company's first name, was titled TheWaveVR. The app was accessible through different virtual reality devices, some allowing the user to watch music being performed while others allowed the user to DJ their own set and perform for an audience. Wave performances are immersive and interactive experiences that are performed live. Performers and other attendees are represented by virtual avatars. Past Wave performers have included John Legend, Justin Bieber, Dillon Francis, Lindsey Stirling, and The Weeknd.
In January 2021, Wave announced it would be shutting down its Wave Beta app at the end of March that year. A couple years prior, Wave removed its original focus from VR technology to gaming and livestreaming after realizing the VR industry was not yet far enough along in terms of audience popularity. They continued to host the app to allow its community creations to stay active. The app shutdown was prompted by the shutdown of Google's Poly, a website for uploading and downloading 3D objects to use in augmented and virtual reality applications, which Wave's app was built on. Wave said in a statement about the shutdown that the company would make an effort to eventually release a more evolved app.
