Toposens is a company that develops visual technologies for use in robotics and autonomous vehicles. The company was founded by Alexander Rudoy, Rinaldo Persichini, and Tobias Bahnermann in 2015, in Munich, Bayern, Germany.
Toposens works with companies in industries such as the automotive industry, smart buildings, robotics, and more to create 3D ultrasonic technologies. Its sensors are able to provide distance measuring for 3D positioning, locate multiple objects, and operate in conditions without light or that have dust and dirt.
Their sensors utilize a transducer to periodically send ultrasonic pulses in the air which are reflected off of nearby objects and then received back by the the sensor. The measurement is made by tracking the time it takes for the reflected pulse to reach the sensor again.
The sensors are limited by the physical properties of ultrasound and the characteristics of the objects including surface size, orientation, and material properties. Objects with smaller surface sizes have a lower chance of being detected. Averse angles of orientation can also lower detection chances. Materials such as foam or other sound absorbing materials can inhibit detection as well.
