Storj

Storj is a blockchain based distributed cloud storage platform.

Storj is a blockchain and software development company founded by Shawn Wilkinson, James Prestwich, Jim Lowry, John Quinn, and Tome Boshevski on April 3, 2014 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

The company offers a blockchain-based, encrypted, distributed cloud storage platform designed to be sustainable and open-source. Key features of the Storj cloud platform include end-to-end encryption, peer-to-peer technology, and very high availability.

The Storj cloud storage platform uses the platforms native ERC20 cryptocurrency token called STORJ that allows users to be rewarded for renting their unused storage space for for purchasing services offered by the Storj platform.

Storj, pronounced as “storage,” is an open-source cloud storage platform. Basically, it uses a decentralized network of nodes to host user data. The platform also secures hosted data using advanced encryption.

In a white paper published in December,2014, Storj was first introduced to the world as a concept. It was to be a decentralized peer-to-peer encrypted cloud storage platform.

Two years later, an updated white paper was published. Here, a decentralized network — connecting users who need cloud storage space with those who have hard drive space to sell — was described. The platform was launched in late 2018.

People with hard drive space and good internet connectivity can participate in the network. They become a unit in the network, called a node. Space providers are rewarded by Storj tokens.

Published in December 2014, the Storj whitepaper was first introduced to the world as a concept. It was supposed to be a peer-to-peer decentralized cloud storage platform for encrypted data.

Two years later, an updated whitepaper was published. Here, a decentralized network was described that connects users who need cloud storage with those who have hard drive space and are willing to sell it. The platform was launched at the end of 2018.

Users who have hard disk space and a good Internet connection can join the network. They become a unit in the network, the so-called. node. For providing storage, they are rewarded with Storj tokens.

Storj was founded by Shawn Wilkinson in May 2014. Wilkinson was a software developer from Atlanta. He came up with the idea of how blockchain technology can be used to create a decentralized cloud storage network.

The co-author of the first whitepaper was John Quinn. Together they published it at the end of 2014. Since then, the concept and details have changed. The current version of Storj, V3, was launched in mid-2019. In addition to being a blockchain enthusiast, Quinn boasted extensive experience in business development. Prior to creating his own projects (including Storj), he worked in investment banking. The concept was finally registered as Storj Labs Inc. in May 2015.

At the time of the company's founding, Wilkinson served as CEO. He later resigned, giving way to a more experienced manager. Ben Golub is currently the CEO. Wilkinson became Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and Quinn became Chief Revenue Officer (CSO) as well as a member of the company's board of directors.

The platform was able to raise 910 bitcoins worth about $460,000 in 2014 in a public sale. Three years later, they raised $3 million in a seed funding round and then held a token sale that raised another $30 million.

When viewed as a decentralized cloud storage network, Storj is unique in many ways. First, unlike traditional cloud storage solutions that occupy huge data centers, Storj operates on a network of thousands of independent computers.

Anyone with a few extra terabytes of hard drive space can become a node on the platform by installing Tardigrade. All it requires is a reliable and stable internet connection.

The efficiency of the network is such that hosts pay far less to store their data than they would with traditional cloud storage services.

Initially, 500 million Storj tokens were issued on the Ethereum blockchain. After Storj Labs held its first token sale, 75 million of them were burned. Now the total number of tokens in circulation is approximately 425 million.

In 2017, before the token sale, the company blocked 245 million tokens in reserve. During the sale itself, 70 million tokens were released into circulation.

Storj Labs Inc. uses its Tardigrade software installed on host computers to create and protect user data. The Anonymous Node Network eliminates the need to trust cloud storage providers to keep our data private.

The system is also peer-to-peer encrypted, which means that each file is encrypted before being dispersed across a network of independent hosts. Each node only receives a random fragment of the whole file, with decryption keys shared between each node and host, making hacking nearly impossible.
