History

At the time when Rufus Porter started Scientific American in 1845, the magazine was a broadsheet newspaper released biweekly and focused primarily on patents and advice for inventors. Its full title at the time was The Scientific American. The company was sold to Orson Desaix Munn and Alfred Ely Beach ten months after its founding. From 1902 to 1911, The Scientific American also supervised the publication of the Encyclopedia Americana. The Scientific American was sold again to Gerard Piel, Dennis Flanagan, and Donald Miller in 1948 and renamed simply Scientific American. Scientific American transitioned to being a monthly publication in 1921 and launched its website in 1996. Scientific American also produced a show on PBS titled Scientific American Frontiers, which ran from 1990-2005. Scientific American was purchased in 1986 and is currently owned by Holtzbrinck group of Germany.
