SannTek Labs is a Canada-based start-up with a product that is intended to be used as a breathalyzer for roadside impairment testing of cannabis usage. The company has designed the product because in between the time when someone is pulled over on the suspicion of driving while experiencing cannabis intoxication and when their blood is drawn, the tetrahydrocannabinol level in their blood can drop significantly, leading the driver to possibly receive no repercussions for driving while under the influence. Standard roadside tests can also lead to false positives when a driver has smoked cannabis in the days prior to being pulled over. SannTek Labs' product can detect cannabis usage from the past three to four hours.
The company uses nanotechnology to develop the sensor element of its product. It can detect Delta-9 THC in the driver's breath when they blow into the product. SannTek Labs has stated that it is hoping to sell its product for $1,000 or less so that it is easily available to law enforcement agencies.
On August 19, 2019 SannTek announced raising $150,000 in seed funding from Y Combinator (lead investor) and LombardStreet Ventures.
