History

The company's history began with the only tobacco and cigarette store opened by Philip Morris in 1847 in London on Bond Street.

After the death of Mr. Morris, his business passed to his wife Margaret and brother Leopold. In 1881 the company became famous, Leopold Morris together with Joseph Grunbaum founded Philip Morris & Company and Grunebaum, Ltd. In 1885 , this partnership was severed and the company was renamed Philip Morris & Co., Ltd.

The company came out of the control of the family that founded it in 1894 , when ownership passed to William Curtis Thomson and his family. During Thomson's reign, the company supplied tobacco to the royal court of Edward VII , and in 1902 it was registered by Gustav Ekmeyer in New York . Ownership of the company was divided in half between British and American partners. From 1872 , Ecmeyer was the sole representative of Philip Morris in the United States ; he imported and sold cigarettes made in England .

1919 was a turning point for the company. It was marked by the emergence of the Philip Morris trademark in the form of a crown, the acquisition of Philip Morris in the United States by a new US-owned firm, and its Virginia registration as Philip Morris & Co., Ltd., Inc. By the end of the next decade, the company began producing cigarettes at its factory in Richmond, Virginia ; and in 1924 the Marlboro cigarette brand appeared , which later became one of the most famous.

By the mid-1950s, the company was part of American culture, and soon after, Philip Morris International was founded to manufacture and market products around the world.

Having won a strong position in the United States, the management of Philip Morris Inc. decided to sell its products worldwide. Philip Morris (Australia) Ltd was founded in 1954 , and a year later the international division of Philip Morris Overseas , which in 1961 became Philip Morris International.

At that time, there was a field of activity for the impressive expansion of markets by concluding licensing agreements and rapidly increasing the number of branches of the company around the world. In 1963 , the first branch in Europe was named Swiss Fabriques de Tabac Réunies .

By 1972 , Philip Morris International had sales of 113 billion units; by that time, production and sales had been established in many markets around the world. For distribution in the former Soviet Union , the company's specialists developed American-style cigarettes, which in 1977 opened access to markets behind the Iron Curtain.

Since its inception, Philip Morris International has established its position in countries and regions around the world, including Central and South Africa, as well as Japan . Between 1981 and 2004 , sales increased from 249 billion cigarettes to 761 billion. Operating profit also grew in proportion to these indicators.

In the 1990s, tightly controlled markets in Eastern Europe opened, and Philip Morris introduced controlling stakes in several factories in Lithuania , Russia and Poland . In addition, new factories were built, for example, in the cities of St. Petersburg in Russia, Almaty in Kazakhstan .

Cigarettes are manufactured in more than 50 companies worldwide and sold in 160 countries.

Founded in the 19th century, Philip Morris International has become a global organization with more than 75,000 employees.

As of 2007, the company's products accounted for 15.6% of the global cigarette market.

In May 2021, Jacek Olczak , Chief Operating Officer of the company, became the General Director of the company, replacing Andre Kalancopoulos , who had been managing the company since 2013 and became the Chairman of the Board of Directors .
