Founded in 1951, Naval Postgraduate School is a graduate research university located in Monterey, CA. The university houses four postgraduate schools: Defense Management, Engineering and Applied Sciences, International and Defense Studies, and Operational and Informational Sciences. The school also functions as a satellite office of the United States Naval War College, College of Distance Education (CDE). Naval Postgraduate School offers masters and doctorate degrees, along with resident and distance learning certificates in a variety of fields.NPS is an equal opportunity school.In 2020, NPS was nationally ranked in the top 20 percent for graduate schools in Public Affairs, and #1 nationally for Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

The Naval Postgraduate School was established in 1909 in Annapolis, MD. In 1945, NPS became a fully-accredited, degree-granting graduate institution. Two years later, Congress authorized the purchase of the Hotel Del Monte and 627 acres of surrounding land for use as an independent campus for the school. In December 1951, NPS moved to its current campus in Monterey, CA.
