National Space Society (NSS) is a Washington, D.C.-based independent entity with the stated goal of enabling people to live and work in communities beyond Earth with the intention of bettering humanity.It was created out of a merger in 1987 of the National Space Institute (established in 1974) and L5 Society (established in 1975).
The organization makes it possible for anyone to participate in space-related activities through membership with NSS, student competitions, conferences, and political action networks.It also has a focus on elevating awareness of the importance of space travel, which it delivers through congressional visits.Furthermore, NSS creates educational activities to inspire students in areas related to science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM).The organization is based out of the United States but there are chapters of it located worldwide.
The NSS holds an annual competition for students from around the globe. The competition consists of students designing viable communities in space. The students need to design and develop communities that could be constructed and operated in space in a safe, ergonomically manner.
