Lightlife, originally known as The Tempeh Works, was founded in 1979 in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The Tempeh Works changed it's name in 2000 to Lightlife, and would later relocate it's headquarters to Turner Falls, Massachusetts.

On September 16, 2013, Brynwood Partners VI L.P acquired Lightlife from ConAgra Foods for an undisclosed amount. The aqcuisition resulted in the appointments of Roy Lubetkin as CEO and President, and Michael Morin as CFO.

On February 21, 2017, Maple Leaf Foods, a Canadian packaged meats company, announced it acquired Lightlife for $140,000,000.
