Figur8 is a company that is developing a digital platform and wearables for tracking body movements as a biomarker. Nan-Wei Gong and Tiegeng Ren founded the company while employed as researchers at MIT Media Lab and Massachusetts General Hospital Sports Science Lab, making Figur8 an MIT spinout company.
The technology developed by Figur8 is configured to create a baseline of performance and pinpoint weaknesses in athletes' bodies to decrease the risk of future injuries. The company made an additional statement that it plans to use the technology to assist with Parkinson's disease in the future.
The Figur8 product utilizes FlexTech sensor technology that measures movements and flexing in muscles and joints and produces 3D images of the actions. Figur8 claims that in conjunction with the proprietary algorithm it has developed, more than one million data points can be analyzed in a single body movement, allowing minimally trained professionals to locate the site of injury and provide biomedical insights to providers in real-time. As of 2019, the technology developed was only available for elite athletes, including many current or former professional players. However, it has since become more accessible to employers, patients, payers, and health plans.
