Ello is a developer of an artificial intelligence-based educational technology platform designed to help children learn how to read. The company's technology uses evidence-based reading instruction and behavioral psychology to help children continue to learn when they get stuck reading and offers a personalized reading environment. Ello was founded in 2020 by Elizabeth Adams, Tom Sayer, and Catalin Voss and is headquartered in San Francisco.
Ello's AI platform, Read With Ello, offers children a combination of a real book with speech recognition technology. The platform acts as a personal reading coach and offers children reading instruction to help young readers when they get stuck, combined with behavioral psychology approaches to help motivate those same readers to keep going.
This works by sending a package of books that work with Ello's application. The child reads out loud from the book to the Ello app while Ello coaches them to understand what they are reading and improve their reading capabilities. The books are delivered monthly on a subscription basis and can be kept for an additional fee or returned to Ello. As well, when the children finish their reading, they earn a prize of their choice from Ello.
