Character AI is the developer of open-ended conversational applications designed to build dialog agents with applications including entertainment, education, and general question-answering. The company specializes in neural language models and tools for brainstorming, language learning, and more.
Character AI offers two different character creation modes—Quick Mode and Advanced Mode. Quick Mode aims to allow creators to create characters in under a minute, while Advanced Mode is intended for users who wish to spend more time building their characters with detail-oriented tools.
Users can access a reference section that outlines all the alterable character attributes. It is recommended that new users start with a Quick Mode character to familiarize themselves with the basics of the software before moving on to advanced tools, such as custom definitions and image generation. According to the company, three main factors influence a character's response:
- Character attributes
- Character training from conversations (including star ratings)
- Conversation context
For instance, a character can specialize in playing a particular word game, but if the user decides to talk about something completely unrelated, it may try to be cooperative and follow their lead. User feedback collected over time will also gradually influence how the character responds in a particular situation.
Below are listed all the pieces of information users can enter to change the nature of a character. Note that the fields marked with * do not influence the character's behavior, though that could change in the future. Most of the items listed are optional, and supplying more information does not guarantee that a character will act more in line with the user's intention.
- Name (required)
- Greeting (required in Quick Create mode)
- Avatar*
- Short description
- Long description
- Categories
- Character visibility*
- Definition visibility*
- Image generation
- Image style
- Direct image description visibility
- Definition
The Definition field gives users the most flexibility to develop characters, although in certain cases, less information may yield better results. Depending on the character and scene, giving the character only a creative greeting causes it to invent the rest of the context itself; this may produce superior results than a more detailed definition.
