Boxee was a New York CIty-based electronics and software company with a specific device that was meant to be used to share personal media as well as view public media on a television. It was acquired by Samsung in 2013 for $30 million and in 2015, all of the employees working for Boxee were laid off and the project was brought to a halt.
The Boxee Box connected to a user's television, allowing them to view content from the internet, as well as streaming services, such as Netflix. It also allowed for the user to connect to social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, to get and give video recommendations to friends. The platform initially ran on XBMC, an open source software and later released its hardware known as a Boxee Box. Boxee allowed for users to record content using a DVR feature that held the content in the cloud. The DVR feature was an available extra feature and thus had a monthly charge. It also had dual turners so that users could watch one type of content while watching another.
