Wolfram Alpha is a platform, created by Wolfram Research, that allows the execution of dynamic computations based on collections of built-in data, algorithms, and methods. The platform was launched in 2009 by Stephen Wolfram and Theodore Gray and is headquartered in Champaign, Illinois, United States.
The platform was created in order to provide data in various fields that include physical sciences, technology, geography, weather, cooking, business, music, health, and others. Their data is utilized to create a system for heuristics, algorithms, rules, methods, and theorems. Their platform utilizes a natural language processing system to curate knowledge, produce algorithms, and visual presentations.
The long-term goal of Wolfram Alpha is
to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable and accessible to everyone.
Wolfram Alpha offers a free service and paid service called Wolfram Alpha Pro that allows users to upload their own data and images for analysis, receive customized and interactive visuals for presentation, access more computation time, and access optimized web apps. Wolfram Alpha Pro is separated into two services for students and educators.
Wolfram Alpha is built on the Wolfram Language, developed by Wolfram Research growing out of Mathematica. The Wolfram Language has three roles in Wolfram Alpha:
- Its general symbolic structure provides the framework in which Wolfram Alpha's knowledge is represented and all the operations on it are implemented.
- The algorithms built into the Wolfram Language provide the computational foundation to implement the methods and models in Wolfram Alpha.
- Its deployment platform makes it possible to deliver Wolfram Alpha to users.
With the outbreak of the novel COVID-19 (coronavirus), the platform has been accumulating data to provide information regarding the virus and pandemic. This includes modeling, analysis, and visualizations. They are also inviting external sources to provide information related to the coronavirus in order to enable a community to form.
