Stephen Timoshenko (born December 11, 1878, and died May 29, 1972) was an engineer originally from the Russian Empire who later held citizenship in the United States. He is best known for his notable work in Timoshenko beam theory. Timoshenko studied at the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and was a doctoral advisor to several prominent engineers, including Egor Popov, Aaron Miles, and Jacob Pieter Den Hartog.
Timoshenko had several other doctoral students, such as John Maulbetsch, James N. Goodier, Arthur Kurzweil, and Joseph Charles Marin. His own doctoral advisor was Ludwig Prandtl. He passed away in Wuppertal on May 29, 1972.
