Starcity's stated goal is to create communal housing for middle-income people who don't qualify for government subsidies.
Starcity participated in the YC S16 cohort of Y Combinator and raised an estimated $20,370,000. It plans to build apartments in San Francisco and San Jose. Starcity purchases old hotels, retail facilities, and parking garages and converts them into housing. Starcity renters pay $1,500 to $2,000 per month for a furnished bedroom that measures from 180 to 220 square feet, with from 10 to 20 tenants sharing a kitchen and living room. An additional $300 fee is paid to use furnished communal spaces and for cleaning.
