Scelta Mushrooms was founded by Jan Klerken in 1993, and is headquartered out of Venlo, Netherlands. Scelta Mushrooms processes mushrooms to make mushroom related products that are fresh, frozen, or preserved, for distribution to the food industry, food suppliers, and food retailers around the world.
Jan Klerken and his family have 3 generations, and over 50 years, worth of experience within the mushroom industry. Jan Klerken’s father set up his own mushroom growing and canning business in 1963 called Champex. Jan Klerken began working for his father’s company at the age of 16, until his father sold the business in the 1970’s. After the sale of Champex, Jan Klerken set up his own business buying mushrooms grown in France and Spain, and processing them in the Netherlands — he sold this business in 1988. In 1993, Jan Klerken founded Scelta Mushrooms after learning that “scelta” means choice in Italian. Jan Klerken and his wife had two children that are now both involved with Scelta Mushooms.
In 2008, Scelta Muchrooms opened up the Scelta Institute. The Scelta Institute provides a space for the head office of Scelta Mushrooms, a research and development lab, and a kitchen for chefs to test products and come up with new recipes. The Scelta Institute building was designed by a Belgian Architect named Fred Hias.
