Tandon graduated with a Bachelors of Science and Master of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California. Upon graduating he went to work for a Los Angeles startup as an application engineer. He left the startup to start his own accounts payable company IQBackOffice.
In 2000, Tandon sold the company and returned to India to work for Celetronix. He continued working with Celetronix overseeing their Indian operation until 2006. He served as Chairman of the Electronics Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) and is a member of Young President Organization (Mumbai Chapter).
In 2010, Tandon co-founded the company FreeCharge that allowed users of pre-paid phones to purchase minutes using their device instead of buying minutes at the store. He went on to transform FreeCharge into an e-commerce platform. FreeCharge was eventually be acquired by Snapdeal. He has served as Non-Executive Independent Director of AAVAS Financiers Limited since July 27, 2017. Tandon is currently the managing director of Tandon Group, Managing Director and Chairman of the Board at Infinx Healthcare, a software provider for patient access and revenue cycle management for healthcare providers. He is also Managing Director of Syrma Technology, an electronics manufacturing services provider. Tandon went on to work as managing director of Tandon Group, where he currently oversees strategy and operations of all group companies and works as an angel investor proving funding for startups.
In 2010, Tandon and Kunal Shah created a mobile phone app that allowed user to buy minutes using their phone and offset the cost through coupons. FreeCharge became India's fastest growing mobile payment app. Tandon disrupted India's largely cash-based society with the FreeCharge app since users traditionally paid in cash to local stores to recharge metro cards, pay utility bills.
