Router Chain is a proof-of-stake (PoS) layer 1 blockchain based on Tendermint's Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus engine (to validate state changes within and outside the chain network) and the Cosmos SDK. As a proof-of-stake blockchain, the Router chain is run by a network of validators with economic incentives to act fairly. Apart from validating state changes on the Router chain, these validators also monitor state changes on other chains. The primary function of the Router architecture is to enable contracts on one chain to interact with contracts on other chains.

Router Protocol features blockchain architecture that enables the communication between various Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and non-EVM blockchain ecosystems, support for middleware contracts and application-specific bridging logic, and a suite of developer tools for integrating and developing decentralized applications (dApps) across various blockchains. With this, Router Protocol aims to contribute to the growth of the cross-chain ecosystem.

The company builds on the practice of using a blockchain as a bridging layer by introducing the concept of a programmable middleware into Web3. This results in the simplification of frameworks and modules, which can subsequently be used by developers to make their dApps operable across multiple blockchain ecosystems.

Product options for businesses and enterprises

Router Protocol's customers can choose from four product options: OmniChain Framework, Voyager Suite, CrossTalk Framework, and Router Chain Core.

  • OmniChain Framework is intended for applications requiring a stateful bridging logic or a decentralized accounting layer.
  • Voyager Suite is a native cross-chain asset transfer bridge for developing applications such as cross-chain yield aggregation.
  • CrossTalk Framework is suitable for cases that necessitate cross-chain instruction transfers without a bridging logic.
  • Router Chain Core is designed for developers focusing on interoperability as it allows for dApps to be built directly on the Router blockchain.
CrossTalk library

Router Protocol's CrossTalk library enables contracts on one chain to pass instructions to contracts activated on another chain without requiring the deployment of any contracts on the Router chain. The library can be installed into a development environment without affecting any other parts of the user's product. It is best suited for cross-chain dApps that do not require custom bridging logic or any data aggregation layer in the middle.

CosmWasm toolkit

The CosmWasm toolkit enables developers to build blockchain applications on the Router Chain from the ground up or transfer their existing applications to the Router chain.

Global Liquidity via Voyager

Voyager is a swapping engine that allows for asset transfers, asset transfer sequencing, and arbitrary instruction transfers across chains. Voyager features a development suite that includes the following:

  • A widget that is useable by other platforms to give their users the option to perform cross-chain transactions directly from their user interface (UI)
  • An API and an SDK that implement Voyager's back-end capabilities into projects that use their own UI or platform for offering the cross-chain asset swap functionality
  • The sequencer library, which enables the development of cross-chain applications that require both asset transfer and instruction transfer in a single request
ROUTE token

Router Protocol's planned native digital token ROUTE is a transferable asset functioning as the gas fee and governance token in the Router network. Initially, the token was to be used in the following ways:

  • For governance purposes; the future of the protocol will be decided by ROUTE holders who can use the currency to vote on Router's governance proposals. The responsibilities of introducing and passing proposals as well as vetting concerning protocol amendments and upgrades will lie with the network's active stakeholders
  • As gas currency (the native token on the Router chain)
  • To incentivize validators whose block rewards will be paid out in ROUTE tokens
  • As a fee token for fees associated with the CrossTalk framework
