Prime Lightworks was founded in 2015 by Kyle Flanagan to investigate measurements of impulsive thrust from a closed radio frequency cavity in vacuum. This technology, called radio frequency (RF) resonant cavity thrusters, has the potential to eliminate satellite propellant mass in favor of renewable electric propulsion but remains controversial.
A radio frequency (RF) resonant cavity thruster was first proposed in 2001 by Roger Shawyer of SPR Ltd under the name EmDrive. Numerous groups have made attempts to build and test similar and related technologies and debate continues on the validity of such a drive.
