OpenZeppelin provides security products to build, automate, and operate decentralized applications and performs security audits on organizations' systems and products. OpenZeppelin was founded in 2015 by Demian Brener, CEO, and Manuel Araoz, who is no longer with the company. Until July 22, 2019, the company operated under the name Zeppelin.
OpenZeppelin's two main products are Contracts and Defender, and the company provides full security audits for an organization's distributed systems. OpenZeppelin Contracts helps minimize risk by using proven libraries of smart contracts for blockchains, including the Ethereum blockchain, and includes commonly used implementations of ERC standards. OpenZeppelin Defender automates smart contract operations to deliver high-quality products with lower risk, and the Defender Admin feature allows organizations to manage all smart contract administration, including controls, upgrades, and pausing.
On September 30, 2021, OpenZeppelin announced a $23 million investment in Forta, a security service aimed at smart contracts. The investment round was led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and included capital from Coinbase Ventures, True Ventures and Blockchain Capital, among others. OpenZeppelin will retain a stake in Forta.
