Joanna Gaines is an American designer and entrepreneur. She is known for fixing up houses on reality TV with her husband, Chip Gaines.
Gaines was born in Kansas on April 19, 1978, and later moved to Texas with her family. She attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and had a journalism internship in New York City for the TV show 48 Hours. In 2001, Gaines graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications.
Gaines began her career as an entrepreneur by opening a home decor shop called Magnolia Market in 2003. She temporarily closed the shop to focus on her family and interior design. Her partner, Chip Gaines, has a construction business that remodels houses, and Joanna contributes her design expertise. She also authored a blog to document their process and results of flipping homes.
The blog was spotted by an HGTV executive, and Chip and Joanna were offered a home renovation TV show on the network. Fixer Upper premiered in 2013 on HGTV and was extremely popular with audiences. It was nominated for two Primetime Emmys and ran for five seasons until 2018.
In 2022, Gaines launched the Magnolia Network, which partners with Discovery Plus, a streaming platform. She aired her new TV show Fixer Upper: Welcome Home, and it premiered to three million viewers.
Joanna and Chip Gaines have entrepreneurial endeavors in Waco, Texas, in the restaurant, retail, and hospitality industries. These include home goods Shops at the Silos; Little Shop on Bosque, the site of the original Magnolia Market (reopened in 2014); a restaurant, bakery, and coffee shop; and homes to rent for vacations, Some of them are homes that Gaines renovated herself.
In addition to these brick-and-mortar establishments, Joanna Gaines has several retail lines sold at major retailers. These include Magnolia Home homegoods line sold at Bed, Bath, and Beyond; Hearth & Hand product line sold at Target; and Magnolia paint, sold at Lowe's and Ace Hardware.
