Hydro One is an electricity distribution and transmission utility serving the province of Ontario, Canada. It is regulated by the Ontario Energy Board, which controls electricity rates and the natural gas industry in the province and provides electricity to roughly 1.4 million customers across Ontario, representing roughly 26 percent of the total number of customers in Ontario.
For residences, besides power delivery, Hydro One also offers move-in and move-out services, meter reading submissions, a "call before you dig" service to keep residents safe, tree trimming services, and service upgrades. This includes information for seasonal residents and warnings for customers in the case of inclement weather and possibilities for power outages.
For businesses, besides power delivery, Hydro One offers outage alerts, my meter services, summary billing services, network operating, and an outage map to help businesses understand their usage and where they can save on use. This includes information for commercial and industrial companies, mining operations, and farmers on power generation and usage. As well, Hydro One offers resources for builders and contractors to help them work around power lines or move a large vessel and to connect lines to new buildings.
Hydro One traces the organization's history back 1906 and the passing of the Power Commission Act through the Ontario Legislature to establish the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario. Following the 1998 passing of the Energy Competition Act, Ontario Hydro, which was the renamed Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario, was restructured into several separate entities responsible for electrical generation, transmission and delivery, and price management with a final goal of privatization. Hydro One was established at this time with the Government of Ontario as a sole shareholder, making it a Crown Corporation. In November 2015, Hydro One became a publicly traded company on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with the goal of 60 percent of the company being held by private investors.
