Greyhound Lines is an American transportation company and operator of intercity buses. The largest operator of motorcoaches in the United States, Greyhound operates a fleet of 1700 buses and 123 bus routes between 2400 destinations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and serves over 16 million customers annually. The company is headquartered in Dallas, Texas and is owned by parent organization FlixMobility.
Greyhound was founded by Carl Eric Wickman in 1914, who established a bus route to transport miners between his home of Hibbing, Minnesota and the iron ore mines in Alice, Minnesota. In subsequent decades, Greyhound's fleet and operations grew and the company added routes in Minnesota, throughout the Midwest, and eventually across the United States and into Canada and Mexico. The company adopted the Greyhound name in 1929. Following declines in profitability and a series of drivers' strikes, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1990 to avoid the dismantling of the company and disruption in service. In 1998, Greyhound Lines was acquired by Canadian transportation company Laidlaw International, Inc. In 2007, Greyhound Lines was acquired by FirstGroup, the UK's largest rail and bus company. In 2021, Greyhound Lines was acquired by German transportation startup FlixMobility.
