History

Headquartered in Oxford, UK, Diffblue was founded in 2016 by researchers Daniel Kroening (chief scientist) and Peter Schrammel (CTO). The company was spun out of the AI research group at the University of Oxford. Kroening's background includes building software verification tools and being the primary author of the C bounded model checker (CBMC) verification framework. Schrammel's experience includes working as a software lead in the embedded systems industry. Kroening and Schrammel split their time at the company with academia. Kroening is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford and Schrammel is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Sussex. The company's CEO is Mathew Lodge, who was previously SVP at Anaconda and Vice President of Cloud Services at VMWare.

Funding

Diffblue raised $22 million in funding in June 2017, in a series A round led by Goldman Sachs Principal Strategic Investments, alongside Oxford Sciences Innovations (OSI), and the Oxford Technology and Innovations Fund (OTIF). In January 2022, the company announced it had closed a venture funding round that brought its total raised to $32 million. The round was led by IP Group Plc with participation from Oxford University, Oxford Technology Investment Fund (OTIF), and private investors. Diffblue announced an additional $8 million up round on November 21, 2022. The round was led by AlbionVC with participation from venture investors IP Group, Parkwalk, Hostplus, and Oxford Technology and Innovations EIS Fund.
