Company

The Energy Policy Act of 1992 created the United States Enrichment Corporation, a government corporation, out of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Uranium Enrichment Enterprise. The new government corporation began operations in July 1993.

The U.S. government sold the company in an initial public offering in 1998, and USEC Inc., a private, investor-owned company, began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The company continued to operate the country’s Cold War-era enrichment plants until the last one, Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, was shut down in 2013.

After a financial restructuring in 2014, the company re-emerged as Centrus Energy Corp., with a stronger balance sheet and a new board of directors. In 2015, the Board selected a new leadership team, which is focused on expanding and diversifying its business.

Centrus Energy’s corporate headquarters are in Bethesda, Maryland, with facilities in Oak Ride, Tenessee and Piketon, Ohio. Centrus’ Oak Ridge location is home to its gas centrifuge uranium enrichment technology, engineering, and advanced manufacturing. At Centrus’ Piketon facility, the company successfully demonstrated its advanced U.S. gas centrifuge uranium enrichment technology. Centrus is now conducting decontamination and decommissioning activities at the facility, which is located on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant reservation.

Centrus Japan, LLC a subsidiary company has offices in Tokyo to provide a local liaison for the company’s key utility customers and business partners in Japan and other key countries in the region.
