Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications on January 10, 1997, on the basis of the Almaty Energy Institute (AEI), which existed from 1975 to 1997, was created. AUPET is the first non-state technical university with the status of a non-profit organization. Training is conducted in the Kazakh and Russian languages. In 2013, education in English in two specialties: “Radio Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications” and “Electric Power Engineering” was started so far. In 1989, the Almaty Energy Institute was the first in Kazakhstan and one of the few in the Soviet Union which was certified by a commission of the State Inspectorate of the USSR State Administration. The high level of training at AEI was officially recognized at the Union level.
This is the undoubted success of a group of students, teachers and university management. In May 1996, by a resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a large-scale reorganization of the network of higher educational institutions was carried out. In the regions of the republic, regional universities were created by combining former independent higher education institutions. The Almaty Energy Institute to the Kazakh National Technical University as a structural unit – “Educational and Scientific Complex of Energy and Telecommunications” (ESCET) was attached. In May 1997, ESCET was transformed into the Almaty Institute of Power Engineering and Telecommunications with the with the status of a non-profit joint-stock company. Gumarbek Zhusupbekovich Daukeev was elected as a rector of the new institute.
Since July 2010, the Almaty Institute of Power Engineering and Telecommunications received the status of a university with the right to prepare postgraduates and doctoral students of PhD and a new name – the non-profit joint-stock company Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications (AUPET).
Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeyev is one of the leading technical universities in Central Asia. It provides training in the field of Energy, Telecommunications, IT-technologies, Space Engineering, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The faculty of the university teaches specialists under College, Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs.
